OIL ON CANVAS
The reason that a number of paintings are shown which are already ‘sold’ into private or public collections is that frequently someone will say ‘I wish I could have that one!’ Well, it is possible in a way. A commission is arranged. In that case the artist will create a new painting, with some distinctive differences to ensure the valuable originality of the work. The new painting will have the same or similar subject, emotion and color which first attracted the collector. In a very few instances a signed and numbered limited edition print reproduction is available based on an already sold painting. Those are noted after the title.
Oil on canvas is a classic choice of artists for centuries. Wood also makes a fine substrate. The durability of oil pigments is unsurpassed, especially now that science knows how to avoid ‘fugitive’ colors, the pigments can withstand many years, centuries even, of ultraviolet light. The buttery feel of oil paint, and the opportunity to apply it ‘impasto’ – so it deliciously sticks up off the surface – make it a joy with which to work.
