About the Workshop
I’m happy and excited to share my proprietary techniques for creating stunning works of art on copper. You’ll be learning how to combine the forces of nature (patina action) with your own creative force, creating images on the surface of pure copper.
What We’ll Cover
You’ll come away from this workshop with a firm grasp of materials and technical elements, including:
- Copper sheet • Copper foil • Copper leaf • Surface preparation • Copper oxidation processes • Patina agents • Lacquer resist • Sealing the copper • Oil painting on copper • Mounting considerations • Health and safety
You’ll be working with fundamental issues of the creative process, including:
- Developing subject matter • Finding a voice in the copper • Letting go of ‘mistake’ mentality • Opening the door to serendipity • Identifying your best direction • Avoiding pitfalls, seizing opportunities • Co-creating with higher forces in your work
What will you need to bring? Curiosity and openness. This time around, all materials and supplies will be supplied. Wanting to make it as easy as possible for you.
Who fits in this workshop? This is a guided, intensive hands-on course. Some painting experience is helpful, but not mandatory. We will be adventuring into fresh creative territory where the playing field is level for all.
What is the atmosphere of this workshop? My workshops and classes are known for being positive, inclusive, aspirational and collaborative. You are here to learn, not to perform. Explore, not labor. You will be fully supported in your uniqueness and differences. Come learn not just from me, but from your fellow adventurers.
Why copper? Cu is an extraordinary material, affording creative possibilities of untold beauty and richness. Copper is a reddish metal with a face-centered cubic crystalline structure. It reflects red and orange light and absorbs other frequencies in the visible spectrum. It is malleable, ductile, and an extremely good conductor of both heat and electricity. It can be polished to a bright finish. It is found in group Ib of the periodic table (it is element 29), together with silver and gold. In moist air or when subjected to acidic artist’s solutions it forms a greenish, blueish or darkened surface structure called ‘patina’. You’ll learn how to bring forth and preserve these wonderful effects in your art works.
Why oil? Oil paint is the buttery, rich, luxurious paint used by masters over the past several hundred years because of its excellent handling characteristics, chroma and durability. We may use alkyd-based oil colors for faster drying times.
You will leave the workshop with a finished artwork or two of which you can be proud, and the knowledge and tools to go further on your own.
What You’ll Receive
You will be supplied with copper sheets, patina and lacquer solutions, sanding and burnishing tools, oil paints and solvents, brushes, tapes and masking materials, spray bottles, backing board for your copper art works – and your own breather mask, eye protectors and rubber gloves to take with you.
Note: the products we’ll be using are not highly toxic and not a problem when used properly. However, those with compromised respiratory systems or delicate health should reconsider enrolling.
