Learn new ways forward on your own creative path.

Dissolve barriers to free expression

You may be a new painter without much of a ‘roadmap’. Or an experienced painter who is frustrated by a feeling that you are ’getting in your own way’ when it comes to creating. If so, this course is designed for you.

There are twin paths we follow in the course.

One of them deals with belief systems. What do we believe about what we’re trying to do? Why may we believe that? Are the beliefs limiting? (They often are.) What mindsets, exercises and ‘tricks’ can we apply to break free? (There actually are such solutions.) I share my own personal practices that have enabled me to paint with freedom and joyful momentum.

The other path involves paying attention to certain specific keys or rules in the execution of a painting – the things that can make or break a painting. These truths and actionable items dramatically increase the success of my paintings and they will yours, too.

Combined, these two paths will provide you with a surefire way you can enter flow state and enjoy the thrill of creating without barriers. In this state we cultivate process, putting aside thoughts of the end product for a time – and the quality of the end result delivers itself.

Each class will be begin with a reading

from the likes of the Dalai Lama, Martha Graham, Rumi, Robert Pirsig, David Whyte and more. We’ll discuss and internalize something helpful.

Painting demonstration each day

where you will watch and learn as a painting unfolds. I talk about what I’m doing as I work. Questions encouraged. Huge perk: each class demonstration painting is video recorded and a link provided for you to review during and for a period of time after the close of the workshop.

This workshop is appropriate for those at all levels of artistic development. New artists: you’ll blossom. Experienced artists: there will be advanced mentoring.

When you sign up you’ll receive a suggested list of the supplies to bring to the workshop.

Shape-based painting

Don’t worry about bringing subject matter – each day we’ll work from a supplied collection of shapes which provides the structure into which we paint. Within that structure you’ll be expressing yourself with wild abandon. In this workshop we want to devote maximum time to actual painting rather than design and composition-building. Want to talk about envisioning your own shape collections? Of course we will.

By design, this is a small workshop experience

The workshop takes place in my own studio space, a light bright house in Encinitas Highlands within eyeshot of the inspiring Pacific ocean. We’ll break for lunch each day. Bring yours or tap into one of the many great food places in the neighborhood. Coast Highway 101 and beaches are blocks away for a stroll at the end of the session if you choose.

Your payment

reserves your space in the workshop. Cancellations less than 3 weeks before the start of the workshop are not refundable. If something comes up and you can’t attend, no refunds or makeups, sorry. However, the workshop space is transferrable.
